Captain John L. Nicholson, USN, (RET) July 6, 1930 – March 15, 2023
Evelyn S. Nicholson, August 29, 1931 – February 20, 2022
June 8, 1953 marked the beginning of Captain Nick’s & Evie’s remarkable 68 years of marriage and Naval legacy. John L. Nicholson graduated from Oberlin College, entered the Navy and married Evelyn J. Sadona all on this date. Through the early years of flight training and deployments, various commands and moves across the country they also managed to raise four daughters. In 1977 after retiring from active duty with the Navy, John and Evie bought a ranch while John began his career teaching NJROTC in Sanger, CA. There are many distinguished accomplishments and events in John’s Naval and teaching careers so beautifully documented in this website. One most memorable was John’s ability to greet Everett Alvarez on US soil after 8 ½ years in captivity as a prisoner of war.
It is with an abundance of gratitude we thank Charlie Crabb, our brother in-law, for being by Dad’s side during numerous medical appointments over the years, offering computer, technical support and being the conduit of communication to family and Dad’s friends until the end of his life.
The family would also like to thank Michael and Susan Gyura, Braxton and Thatcher Groce, Adam Gyura and Ron Jones for their work chronicling our father’s extraordinary life into his legacy.
Most importantly recognizing the love, grace, strength and commitment of our mother who truly was “the wind beneath his wings”.
