Good morning Captain, I remember it well. We were all so excited in CIC to finally getting underway. 1976 was my first and only Westpac so I couldn’t wait to go, the Old Salts were so excited to return. I played on the San Diego USO softball team along with 3 other shipmates. The USO gave us a wonderful send off. A whole bunch of staff were there to send us off. It was nice. Incidentally, we won our league and was heading into the playoffs but we missed them due to departure.

    Dear Captain,
O how I remember that morning we left San Diego for WestPac, you sure had your hands full. But that’s what a good skipper does, unties all the knots. And that’s what you did that day, and we were on our way to the Pacific! Nine months of good memories Captain, that last forever.

    Respectfully,
    ABH3 Larry McGinnis
