While a young LTJG in VAW-13 in 1965 flying the EA-1F, a group of us had the occasion to catch a ride on the USS Turner Joy in order to transfer between carriers. While having lunch in the Wardroom with the ship’s XO, he discussed the incident and said that they definitely had been attacked by torpedoes. He said they had turned the ship into the torpedoes (to reduce frontel area) and one came right down the side of the ship. He observed it from the wing of the bridge.
